SMS Opt-In & Consent Process

This page documents exactly how Gurdwara Akaljot collects consent from donors before sending them any text message. It is published publicly so that donors, and our messaging providers, can see the full process.

Consent is optional. Agreeing to receive text messages is never required in order to make a donation, to become a member, or to receive any service from Gurdwara Akaljot. A donor who says no completes their donation exactly the same way and can receive a printed or emailed receipt instead.

How consent is collected

Consent is collected verbally and in person — one donor at a time — at our donation kiosk inside the Gurdwara and at the Gurdwara office. We do not use web forms, purchased lists, rented lists, or any third-party source to add anyone to our text messages.

  1. A donor makes a donation in person at the kiosk or the office.
  2. A sevadar (volunteer) reads the consent script below aloud, word for word.
  3. The donor answers yes or no. Either answer is accepted without any effect on the donation.
  4. If — and only if — the donor says yes, the sevadar records the consent against the donor's record, together with the date and time it was given.
  5. If the donor says no, no phone number is stored for messaging and no text is ever sent.

The exact script read aloud to every donor

“Would you like us to text your donation receipt and a reminder if your monthly donation is still pending? This is optional — your donation goes through either way, and you can say no. If yes, Gurdwara Akaljot Sahib will send you donation receipts and monthly commitment reminders at this number. Message frequency varies, usually no more than a few messages a month. Message and data rates may apply. You can reply STOP at any time to stop the texts, or HELP for help.”

The script is also read in Punjabi for donors who prefer it, with the same meaning and the same optional wording.

What we send

Only two kinds of message. No marketing, no promotions, no fundraising appeals:

1. Donation receipt — sent once, after a donation the donor just made.

2. Monthly commitment reminder — sent to members who committed to a monthly donation, only while that month's donation is still pending.

Message frequency varies, typically no more than a few messages per month. Message and data rates may apply.

How to stop the messages

Reply STOP to any message to stop them immediately. Reply HELP for help. You can also call or email us using the details below and we will remove your number. Opting out does not affect your donation, your membership, or your donation records.
