The Gurdwara Sahib is built and cared for by the Sangat — with hands, with time, and with daswandh.
Kar sewa means “service by hand”. It is the Sikh tradition of building and maintaining the Gurdwara Sahib through the voluntary labour of the Sangat rather than by paid contract alone — carrying, cleaning, digging, cooking for the workers, giving a skill, or giving towards the cost.
The tradition goes back to the Guru Sahibs themselves: the sarovar and buildings at Amritsar were raised by Sikhs working side by side, and no one’s contribution was ranked above another’s. The same spirit holds here. A doctor and a labourer carry the same load, and the seva itself is the reward.
At Gurdwara Akaljot the Sangat has kept this going through every stage of the Gurdwara’s growth — and continues to do so today.
Help us build a spiritual centre for today, for tomorrow, and for the generations to come.
The Sangat of Gurdwara Akaljot has taken up the sewa of building a new Gurdwara Sahib on twelve acres of land — a facility of around thirty thousand square feet, with room for the Darbar Sahib, langar hall, classrooms and the gatherings our community has outgrown at Campbell Road.
This is the Sangat’s own Kar Sewa. It will be built by the hands, the skills and the daswandh of the people who will pray in it. Every contribution, of any size, is part of it.
Together we build a brighter tomorrow in sewa, unity and faith.

Join a sewa day at the Gurdwara Sahib. No experience is needed — there is always work for every pair of hands, and langar is served to everyone working.
Builders, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, engineers and architects in the Sangat have all given their trade to the Gurdwara. If you can, please let the committee know.
Contribute online, by cheque payable to Gurdwara Akaljot, or at the Gurdwara office. Please mark it for Kar Sewa so it is recorded correctly.
Nishan Sahib Sewa 2026 — the Sangat gathered in the rain to complete the sewa together.
No. Most of the seva is carrying, cleaning, serving langar to those working, and keeping the site in order. Come as you are — someone will show you what is needed.
Yes. Kar sewa has always been something whole families do together, and it is one of the best ways for children to understand seva. Please keep younger children away from any active work area.
Yes. Gurdwara Akaljot is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Keep your receipt for your records.
The committee reports on the Kar Sewa to the Sangat, and progress will be published on this page as the work moves forward. You are also welcome to ask the committee directly at the Gurdwara Sahib.
Often, yes. Please call (945) 236‑0109 and speak to the committee about what is needed at this stage of the project.
Whether you give an hour, a skill or your daswandh, the Gurdwara that stands here is built by the Sangat.
